What is the greatest song ever? Well, I’m a thousand years old, and I have heard a million songs. I know the tunes and words to many of them. Some are interesting, some are cute, some are incredible and unforgettable. Often when someone asks me what I think the greatest song is I will give a quick answer. The next day when I’m asked, I’ll give another completely different answer. Today I’ll say “Maggie Mae” by Rod Stewart. I have never heard another song that captured a moment or a feeling in such a compelling manner. It’s like I know Maggie. We all do. And I know the young musician who is trapped in her spell. And in the end, throughout all of the bitterness, he loves her anyway. He couldn’t help himself. Neither can I, I love that song.

I have this discussion topic posted over on the band’s facebook page, and Kay Ormand has some interesting observations recorded there. One thing is sure, great music tunnels into our deepest recesses and finds a way to unlock what we may have had trouble even saying previously.

Tonight we are playing at the Cocoa Beach Air Show. The Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area seems like a little strand of paradise with so much diversity of all kinds. We will be at Oh Shucks on the Cocoa Beach Pier from 8:30 until 10:30, and we’ll be giving it all we’ve got. Hope to see some of you there.

  • To choose one best song is like being forced to select one favorite child or one best moment in life. The fact is if something satisfies you to the fullness of your capacity — nothing can exceed that. However, a number of things may satisfy you to that same degree. For example, I can hear a Mozart symphony or Styx singing “Come Fly Away” and my appreciation will be at a maximum for each. But for the sake of conversation, I will choose “Come Fly Away” by Styx. I don’t think there is a pop song in history that tops it.
