For years to come, many sad songs will be written about the earthquake and tsunami recently experienced by the people of Japan. In time, those who remain will gather the strength to live again. They will, undoubtedly, designate a consecrated place for their memories. But today we grieve with them and know, deep within, that we are all members of one family.

  • I lived in Nagoya, Japan, for over 5 years, so naturally I feel a deep connection to Japan and the Japanese people. They are among the kindest souls I’ve ever known. When the Great Kansai Earthquake struck Kobe in 1995, the quake woke me from a sound sleep even though I was quite a long distance from the epicenter. At the time, we couldn’t imagine too much worse than that disaster…until this happened. I truly can’t comprehend everything that was lost, without warning, in an instant.

I still remember visiting Sendai, which is the largest city to be destroyed by this tragedy, with my mom when we were touring Japan one summer. We attended a charming festival called Tanabata, which commemorates an old folk tale by hanging exquisite banners around the city.

It’s hard to believe that it’s all gone.

My thoughts and prayers are with Japan.

  • Patty, I thought of you and your experiences there when this all happened. Glad that you have your marvelous memories. I’m keeping these people in my heart and prayers too.
